Case Study: Helping Mr. & Mrs. P Plan for Life’s Uncertainties with Confidence.

When it comes to protecting your family and ensuring your wishes are honored, proactive planning can make all the difference. Recently, we had the privilege of assisting Mr. and Mrs. P, a couple who wanted to secure peace of mind should unforeseen circumstances arise.

The Challenge

Mr. and Mrs. P came to us asking: What would happen if either of them were to experience a serious accident or illness, leaving them unable to make important decisions about their health or finances?

Like many couples, they wanted to ensure that, in such a situation, their loved ones—not an unfamiliar court—would have the legal authority to act on their behalf. They wanted people they know and trust to make decisions in their best interest, but they weren’t sure how to put this plan into action.

Our Solution

We introduced Mr. and Mrs. P to the concept of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA)—a legal document that allows individuals to appoint trusted people (known as attorneys) to make decisions on their behalf if they lose the capacity to do so themselves.

Two types of LPAs were particularly relevant:

Property and Financial Affairs LPA
This allows attorneys to manage financial matters such as paying bills, managing bank accounts, and even selling property if necessary.

Health and Welfare LPA
This enables attorneys to make decisions about medical treatment, care arrangements, and even life-sustaining treatment preferences.

By setting up both types of LPAs, Mr. and Mrs. P could ensure their family members would have the authority to step in seamlessly when needed.

The Outcome

With their LPAs in place, Mr. and Mrs. P now have peace of mind. They know that should the unexpected happen, their wishes will be respected, and their family won’t face the stress, expense, or delays of applying to the court for decision-making powers.

What’s more, they’ve chosen trusted individuals—people who know their values and priorities—to act on their behalf. This gives them confidence that any decisions made will truly reflect their best interests.
